Simdega Heritage Centre cum Museum

Approximately a century ago, around the year 1915 during the period of British rule, a building was constructed in Simdega, which was later used as a Sub-Divisional Office. For several decades, this building served as the primary centre for administrative activities in the region.

Important governmental decisions were taken within this building, official records were securely maintained, and it acted as a vital link between the administration and the villages and communities of the district.

Over time, with the construction of modern administrative buildings, the regular use of the old Sub-Divisional Office gradually declined. Nevertheless, the building remains of significant historical, architectural, and cultural importance.

Recognising its historical value, the Simdega District Administration has planned to develop this building into a District Heritage Centre. The objective is to preserve the structure and safeguard the history, culture, and traditional knowledge of Simdega for future generations.

The initiative to develop the old Sub-Divisional Office into a Heritage Centre has been undertaken by the Simdega District Administration under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Ms Kanchan Singh.

Under this plan:

  • The building will be repaired and restored
  • Its original colonial architectural features will be preserved
  • Exhibition halls and galleries will be developed within the premises

Officials from the district administration have inspected the building and have issued directions to commence the necessary conservation and restoration work.

The proposed Heritage Centre aims to be developed as a cultural and educational hub for the Simdega district.

Its key objectives are as follows:
